In this experimental study, the efficiency of the flat belt pulley mechanism was investigated when a timing belt is used instead of the flat belt. Effects of varying pitch of the timing belt on the efficiency of the system and on sliding ratio based on the coefficient of friction were investigated experimentally. Pulley speeds measured against different braking torques and tensioning forces were recorded and with the help of the speed data, variation of the sliding ratios with coefficients of friction was studied. The study was carried out by studying the system efficiency and the coefficients of friction by using flat belt together with the timing belt with its pitch values set at 4.5 mm, 6 mm and 7 mm. During the tests, moments were applied at varying values of 0/10/20/30 and 40 bar by using a hydraulic pump and a flow control valve. The system's operating speeds were set at the values of 500/750 and 1000 rpm. The tensioning forces applied to the system were 100N, 200 N, 300 N, 400 N and 500N. As a result of the experiments conducted, it was found that when the pitch of timing belt is 7 mm, the lowest sliding ratio is obtained. The test results were compared with previously conducted studies presented in literatures.
