The effects of the alkyl groups of dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs) on the tribological properties of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films under boundary lubrication were investigated. Two types of ZDDPs with different alkyl groups were used. The friction test and surface analyses results indicated that the tribological properties of the ta-C films lubricated with poly-alpha olefin (PAO)+ZDDPs depend on the chemical composition of the tribofilm, which in turn depends on the alkyl groups of the ZDDPs. The alkyl groups of ZDDPs thus play an important role in determining the tribological properties of ta-C films.
