Oil in water (O/W) emulsion is in use in industrial steel cold rolling mills since many decades but its lubrication mechanism is still not adequately understood. Researchers have tried to explain the lubrication mechanism of the O/W emulsion through different theories such as plate out, dynamic concentration and mixtures. Rheological behavior and chemistry of formulations have also been used to explain the lubrication phenomenon. O/W emulsions used for study by researchers are generally not the commercial formulations. Commercial formulations, sold by lubricant manufacturers, are based on different emulsifiers and chemical ingredients. Here an attempt has been made to understand the lubrication mechanism of O/W emulsions of commercial formulations of known industrial performance.
