General flexibility promotes the utilisation of batch processes with tank reactors in chemical industry. However, in fine and specialty chemicals industry, continuous processes with microreactors create beneficial conditions for fast and highly exothermic reactions and have potential to reduce costs due to smaller raw material consumption. Technological comparison between batchwise tank reactors and continuous microreactors are presented. Cost savings achieved by process intensification are evaluated. Oxidation of a sulphide group of an aromatic intermediate is used as an example case.
