A SYSTEM FOR REMOTE CONTROL AND OPERATION MANAGEMENT FOR NETWORK OF SATELLITE DATA CENTERS

The system described in the report, has been built upon the technology for remote control and management, developed by Space Research Institute. The system objective is to provide facilities for remote control, maintenance and management of complex multi-hosted automated satellite data processing systems. The most elaborated version of Remote Control System has been implemented in the Wildfire Monitoring Project, which uses data from the network of 8 distant satellite data processing centers (Moscow region, Khanty-Mansiisk, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Khabarovsk) for full coverage of territory of Russia. Data processing, archiving and exchange procedures in the centers are fully automated, and therefore remote control and management facility is an ultimate requirement for successful operation of the entire system throughout the wildfire season. The primary capabilities provided by the system for remote control are: General system status control; Automatic data processing control; Failure response and failure analysis; Remote system management. The entire system has been developed using mostly free and low-cost software packages and operating environment (FreeBSD, MySQL, VNC, Perl, Apache). It allows for essential decrease in requirements for both qualified local managing personnel and work time for support and maintenance of the data processing operations.
