Tatara steelmaking is the ancient method of refining iron in Japan. When iron sand and charcoal are placed in a furnace, a reduction reaction occurs, which is used in the tatara method, It is thought that a steel called kera is formed in the region where a solid solution and a liquid phase of austenite coexist. This steelmaking principle is clearly different from that of the modem method using a blast furnace.
