To fulfill customer demands for quality of steel products, it is significant to develop the technologies for quality improvement to minimize product failure and to yield high quality steel products. Surface defects of steel, that reduce the value of products, were typically caused by the contamination of mold flux in casting process, hyperoxidation and/or outflow of the converter slag to the ladle, surfacing of alumina inclusions in RH refining process, and contamination of slag in tundish operation, as well as mechanical defects caused by the residue of oxide scale in rolling process. Products with defects should be mechanically treated or thermally re-processed, that result in energy, materials and yield loss. It is quite important to specify the kind of causative substances of those defects for high quality of products.
