The Synthesis of Standard Technologies to Create a Life Safety Solution Applicable to the Steel Industry

In their commitment to provide a safe working environment, a Large Oil Company teamed with Accenture to deploy the Life Safety Solution—the Accenture patent-approved wireless-enabled gas detection systems that help protect workers in hazardous environments. Hollowing a successful pilot phase, this Oil Company deployed ALSS across its entire High Conversion Refinery in the USA. Benefits included, immediate visibility of abnormal gas levels to the control room, personal emergency or "man-down" notification in the form of an alarm, continuous gas level readings informing first responders when fresh air is required, location of workers requiring help and integration of alarms with an incident tracking system allowing management in ensure corrective measures. Although initially developed for the oil refining industry, the Accenture Life Safety Solution also has direct applicability to the metals industry. This paper investigates opportunities for leveraging this solution and the associated technology for the steel manufacturing industry.
