Major chemistry and application advancements over the last decade have provided a means to protect work roll and back-up roll wear significantly concurrently improving strip quality by reducing the amount and frequency of rolled-in scale. The extreme environment present in the steel hot mill roll bite makes it very difficult to apply standard Tribology mechanisms to determine the absolute effects of friction reduction and anti-wear reactions. Whether a lubricant is applied straight or in an aqueous or gaseous medium, if it is an organic based material, it will be and must be destroyed to maintain stability on a modern hot mill after it does its work. In large part, because of this need to remove lubrication as a strip is threaded, lubricating metal complexes that can survive 1600 - 2000°F (871 - 1093°C) are never used. Over lubrication can also lead to buckles and ripped tails during the roll bite lubricating process, so whatever mechanism being utilized must be stabilized during use and mostly removed as a rolling campaign progresses. Application methods also have an impact on the line of survivability with positive and negative consequences which will be discussed later.
