During the continuous casting process of steel slabs, the uniformity of solidification, growth of solid shell and distribution of temperature are of importance for the quality of the product. The non-uniform cooling, especially in the transverse direction, greatly affects the shape of the liquid core and the transverse temperature distribution in the slab, an improper control of which will cause defects like partial segregation and crack in the slab. The flow rate and arrangement of the cooling water at the secondary cooling zone remarkably affects the growth of the solid shell, which has been investigated via numerical simulation. Models of heat transfer and solidification for the slab continuous casting process of steels have been developed. The current paper is to predict the liquid core shape and discuss the control of the partial segregation and crack in the steel slab, and provide advices for the operation optimization and quality improvement during continuous casting process.
