The coupling shear pins of a hot plate leveler have experienced a number of unexpected failures and in many cases, the failures occurred in very light leveling load conditions. Quad Engineering Inc. investigated the problem and concluded that excessive variation in leveling roll diameter is a major contribution factor to the coupling shear pin breakage. A new model to calculate the effect of the leveling roll size variation was developed based on contact mechanics. The model can be used to calculate the additional torque induced by the roll diameter variation and the tolerable roll diameter variation for integrated driving levelers.
