The development of the Stretch Reducing Mill since the early 50's until today has meant going from 3-roll stands with one input shaft and bevel gears inside to drive the other two shafts, to three input shaft stands driven by a driving gear systems, to finally evolve into the most modern design, where the stands with the three input shafts are driven independently. In particular the drive system of the Stretch Reducing Mill has gone from individual drives, to group drives equipped with differential gears with one or two superimposed drives, to arrive today to totally independently drive each shaft in each stand in what is called the "STAR DRIVE" for Stretch Reducing Blocks (SRB).
