The Development of Wide Plate/Coil Capabilities for Linepipe Production at Welspun Gujarat Stahl Rohren, LTD. India

Welspun Gujarat Stahl Rohren (Welspun) has been producing LSAW and spiral pipe for the world market from its locations in India over the past 10 years. Recently Welspun has commissioned a new spiral pipe facility in the US. Welspun has since embarked on backward integration to develop a 4.5 m wide Steckel mill plate/coil facility at its location in Gujarat State in India for the main purpose of producing high strength steels for oil and gas transmission pipelines. In addition, this mill has the capability to produce structural plate and coil grades. This facility is with technical support from Siemens-VAI and involves an entire plate/coil rolling facility with an annual capacity of 1.5 million mT. Major equipment for this new facility consists of two 200 tph Five Steins (formerly Stein-Heurtey) reheat furnaces, 4.5 m wide Steckel/plate mill, SiemensVAI laminar cooling, custom designed heavy leveler, and online plate UT. The mill has design capability to produce from 6 to 150 mm thick plate in widths from 1500 - 4500 mm. Coil capability is from 5 to 25 mm thickness in widths from 1500 to 2800 mm. Major markets served by this mill will include India, Asia, Russia, EU countries and the American continents. This paper covers Welspun's development of this state of the art rolling facility including special considerations that were implemented to support the production of high strength oil and gas transmission pipeline and structural steels.
