In the continuous casting process of steel the tundish represents the critical component that allows for the combination of several batch-made ladles into constant production. The flow of the steel in the tundish is influential as it represents the last chance for inclusions to exit the steel before entering the mold. Steel quality can be enhanced by proper flow in the tundish and the tundish-to-mold stream before the steel enters the mold and solidifies. The five strand billet caster considered in this project was unique in that the tundish-to-mold stream was unshrouded. (Figure 1).
