The demand for low nitrogen, inclusion cleanliness and control of aluminum and sulfur content in steel, places constraints on the metallurgical aspects of process control. Yield must be maximized and processing time reduced to achieve higher productivity while utilizing existing equipment. Technology now exists to have rapid, sensor-based, real time analysis for sulfur, silicon, slag, and steel oxygen activity, and to generate from these data precise and timely information to achieve the desired quality and productivity goals. This paper discusses implementation of the available process control sensors with anticipated benefits.
