Effect of Carbon Fibers' Surface Modification on the In-Situ Growth of Carbon Nanotubes

摘要

Surface modification of carbon fibers(CF) by physicochemical methods directs an attractive approach for improvement of metal uptake from solutions. The Effects of carbon fiber pretreatment by HNO3 on catalyst absorption and density of CNTs grown on fibers were investigated. The effects of surface modifications on the properties of carbon fibers were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The surface chemical compositions of carbon fibers before and after modification were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and coverage of CNTs on CF were studied by SEM. Results showed that the modification brings about a large number of functional groups on fiber surface, such as hydroxyl and carbonyl, which results in the increase of catalyst absorption and denser coverage of CNTs.
