Surface modification of carbon fibers(CF) by physicochemical methods directs an attractive approach for improvement of metal uptake from solutions. The Effects of carbon fiber pretreatment by HNO_3 on catalyst absorption and density of CNTs grown on fibers were investigated. The effects of surface modifications on the properties of carbon fibers were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The surface chemical compositions of carbon fibers before and after modification were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and coverage of CNTs on CF were studied by SEM. Results showed that the modification brings about a large number of functional groups on fiber surface, such as hydroxyl and carbonyl, which results in the increase of catalyst absorption and denser coverage of CNTs.
