ON THE DETERMINATION OF OLEFINS IN HEAVY OIL, BITUMEN AND THEIR UPGRADED PRODUCTS

Alkenes (olefins) are reactive compounds commonly absent from petroleum crude oils, excepting few cases when reservoirs have been exposed to magma intrusions and/or radiolysis.Small olefins are produced during oil refining schemes which imply thermal processing. Downhole production of olefinic compounds also occurs as a consequence of production mechanisms, like shale oil production via retorting. Alkenes and, particularly conjugated alkenes, are unwanted components since easily polymerize giving origin to gums and solid deposition.
