The widespread use of antibiotics in both human and veterinary medicine has led to their continual discharge into the environment and their detection in surface waters worldwide. An understanding of the fate of these biologically-active compounds in natural soils and waters is essential to the comprehensive assessment of their potential risk to human and ecological health.Fluoroquinolones(FQs)represent an important and extensively-used class of antibiotics that are continually introduced to receiving waters from hospital effluent, agricultural runoff and wastewater discharge and are considered important emerging organic contaminants.
