Electrochemical (EC) treatment of solutions containing many organic contaminants is accompanied by their rapid degradation. In the case of phenolic compounds, the degradation occurs via the oxidation to benzoquinone intermediates and their breakdown to smaller fragments such as carboxylic acids and/or to CO2 for a complete mineralization of organic contaminants to take place.
