Modern society relies on a vast number of organic compounds from the pharmaceutical, agricultural, materials and other chemical-related industries. It is not surprising that many of these compounds and/or their degradates end up in water treatment facilities or natural waters. Water treatment facilities are therefore challenged with the difficult task of remediating a wide variety of organic contaminants which conventional treatments are not fully capable of cleansing. Presently, the most effective treatments for these organic contaminants are the advanced oxidation technologies, which rely on the in situ production of radicals which can degrade contaminants through oxidative or reductive processes. Several hundred of these advanced oxidation systems are in place at treatment facilities around the country to enhance the capabilities of conventional water purification.
