Biomass is a source of clean, renewable energy that can come from many resource forms such as forestry residues, agricultural waste, plants, animal excretes etc. Biomass can be converted to an energy-dense liquid via fast pyrolysis; this occurs at a high heating rate (thousands of °C/min) and a short residence time for the particles. Owing to the issue of transportation costs of low density feedstock's, converting bulky feedstock into bio-oil is a promising commercial venture in which fast pyrolysis can help due to the high yields associated with it; up to 60-70wt%. An opportunity at the equine facility at Morrisville State College (MSC) has opened up to utilize the horse manure and horse litter for power in an environmentally friendly way whereby conversion to bio-oil and its combustion in an existing boiler systems has potential to replace a portion of diesel fuel to generate electricity.
