Low-temperature coal tar (LTCT) is a by-product from the low-temperature coal carbonization and coal gasification process. It's prominent for the high oxygen-content Oxygen usually exists in the form of hydroxyl, carboxyl or ketone, It is important to analysis these compounds for subsequent processing. Many analytical techniques have been used to characterize the molecular structure and mass distribution of coal derived liquids. The most commonly used technique is mass spectrometry (MS) in combination with techniques such as gas chromatography (GC),liquid chromatography (LC), and injection probe.However, due to the complexity and structural similarity of the species in LTCT, chromatographic peaks of various compounds overlap. Negative-ion electrospray ionization fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS) have been used to characterize the coal tar and coal extracts , The results show that the instrument is an effective means to analyze coal-derived liquids.
