PRODUCTION OF ULSD FROM NAPHTHENIC AND HIGH NITROGEN FEEDSTOCKS

The production of high quality fuels, the increasing demand of middle distillates (jet fuel and diesel oil) as compared to gasoline and the processing of heavier crudes while maintaining reasonable profit margins have been the critical drivers of the oil refining industry in the last decade. The processing of heavier and naphthenic oils and syncrudes is receiving more attention in a scenario of increasing oil prices. In general, these oils contain higher amount of contaminants such as nitrogen and metals, higher aromatic and naphthenic contents, higher yields of residue and sometimes higher acidity. Usually, such oils have been processed blended to other oils which are easier to refine allowing to increase margins without significant penalties in fuel quality and product yields.
