A significant increase of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere has been observed since the industrial revolution, consequently, leading to global warming and drastic climate changes. On the other hand, being the most abundant carbon source in earth's atmosphere, carbon dioxide can be used as a cheap, non-toxic C1 building block in many chemical processes. Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to form various hydrocarbon chains has been intensively studied. However, the formation of aromatic hydrocarbons in a one-step reaction from carbon dioxide, without forming aliphatic hydrocarbons first, remains elusive. We report the selective formation of aromatic hydrocarbons by a novel iron nanocatalyst promoted by carbon dioxide hydrogenation reaction.
