Bimetallic catalysts will be at the heart of many new inorganic and electrocatalytic processes for renewable fuel production. For an optimized bimetallic catalyst it is necessary to know not only which two metals should be employed (which can be determined by computational anticipation of catalytic kinetics, or "rational catalyst design") but also, how to synthesize bimetallic nanoparticles which are well dispersed and contain both metals. This is the arena of "rational catalyst synthesis" and can be achieved by bottom-up control of nanoparticle synthesis.
