Fischer Tropsch CO and CO2 hydrogenation catalysis, used in the production of synthetic fuels, has recently attracted considerable renewed interest due to dramatically increasing costs of crude oil and diminishing oil resources. Co-Pt based catalysts have proved to be attractive catalytic materials in the selective production of sought after products (higher hydrocarbons and oxygenates) for CO hydrogenation, yet the materials used remain poorly defined and subject to change under reaction conditions. This prevents the acquisition of a molecular level understanding of the surface reactions occurring.
