Petroleum is the main source of liquid fuels for transportation. However, as recent events have shown, many of the petroleum-exporting countries are politically unstable, which threatens to disrupt supply leading to speculation and price volatility. The high level of imports into the United States can also have negative effects on the local economy. In addition, the elevation of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere caused by burning huge amounts of fossil fuels, including petroleum, seems to be negatively affecting global weather.
