Furfirral is one of the numerous oxygenated compounds commonly found in bio-oil. Due to their high reactivity, these compounds need to be catalytically deoxygenated to improve bio-oil storage stability, boiling point range, and water solubility. Dumesic et al. have proposed that aldol condensation of furfural with small ketones is a promising approach to produce higher alkanes (C8-C15) for diesel fuel.
