Composite membranes based on room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) bearing a basic anion were highly effective for the selective separation of acetylene in ethylene. The high affinity of the RTILs to acetylene was supported by the comparison of solubility data measured at 313.15 K and at atmospheric pressure. For instance, the solubility of acetylene in 1,3-dimethylpyrrolidinium methylphosphite ([DMPyrr][MeHP03]) is about xx times higher than that of ethylene. Computational and IH NMR results with [DMPyrr][MeHP03] clearly demonstrate that there are substantial interactions between the acidic hydrogen atoms of acetylene and the phosphite anion.
