PREDICTING THE PERFORMANCE OF ARSENIC ADSORPTION MEDIA UNDER VARYING WATER CHEMISTRIES: A STUDY USING RAPID SMALL-SCALE COLUMN TESTS (RSSCTs)

Iron oxide adsorbent media (E33) for arsenic removal has been broadly used and studied. However, there is still a large amount of missing data to accurately predict how the media will perform under a wide variety of water chemistries. A full or pilot scale study on a number of water chemistries would take years to complete. The use of RSSCTs allows us to obtain performance data in a matter of days to weeks. This study consists of RSSCTs packed with E33 treating NSF 53 Challenge Water spiked with typical high and low groundwater concentrations of arsenic, silica, vanadium and pH. Data will be used toward an empirical predictive model for arsenic removal by E33 media. A surface complexation model will also be used and compared to the empirical model. Experimental methods and statistical analyses can be repeated for various adsorbent media classes and water chemistry constituents.
