High product water recovery of membrane RO desalination of brackish water is often restricted due to mineral salt scaling which limits product water recovery. Recovery limits can be alleviated to some extent via the use of anti-scalants dosing and pH feed adjustment. In recent years approaches to increasing product water recovery have included the integration of accelerated chemical demineralization with RO desalting and plant operation with periodic reverse feed flow and forward osmosis as means of preventing the onset of mineral salt scaling. In the present study, a systematic approach that consisted of both experimental and computational analysis was undertaken to evaluate various high recovery options with particular emphasis on technical and economic process feasibility. A summary of the various options will be presented along with an evaluation of the current state-of-the art and research and development needs toward zero discharge brackish water desalination.
