Sertraline, a popular selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drug, can be degraded by hydrogen peroxide activated by Fe-TAML catalysts in a matter of minutes, whereas natural hydrolytic and photolytic degradation processes require days or weeks. Fe-TAML activators are non-toxic, iron-based homogeneous catalysts that can activate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to perform peroxidase-like chemistry on a wide variety of substrates. The catalysts are compatible with natural waters and municipal effluents where sertraline might be encountered. We present strategies for removing sertraline from pure water or buffered solutions, using two different catalysts. Some intermediate and terminal oxidation products have been identified. It appears that the early stages of the Fe-TAML-promoted reaction involve demethylation and deamination of the sertraline molecule.
