In order to study the combustion behavior of complex blended fuels, such as JP-8 and Jet-A, a fuel with a well-defined and reproducible composition is desirable. This often requires the creation of a simplified blend, called a surrogate, which mimics the behavior of the more complex parent fuel. Since the composition of JP-8 and Jet-A can vary significantly from sample to sample, surrogates may become 'tuned' to a specific sample of fuel instead of representing the average behavior of the fuel. This paper examines the applicability of using a readily available Jet-A sample instead of a JP-8 sample as a reference fuel for use in creating surrogates that are applicable in the low and intermediate temperature regime. Furthermore, the impact of the compositional variations of both Jet-A and JP-8 on the development have been investigated. Five samples of JP-8, three samples of Jet-A, and one sample of JP-7 were oxidized in a pressurized flow reactor at elevated pressures to compare the low and intermediate temperature regime reactivity maps. Based on these results, significant care should be taken when selecting either a Jet-A or JP-8 reference sample to ensure that the composition of the sample is representative of the average fuel composition, otherwise significant tuning of the surrogate will occur.
