Transient characteristics of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitric oxide (NO) with ammonia (NH{sub}3) over vana-dia-based monolith honeycomb catalysts were examined. Using a simulated exhausted gas composed of N{sub}2, O{sub}2, and NO species, the transition of the concentration of both NO and NH{sub}3 species was monitored and found to be non-trivial for the start-up of the SCR process. The results reported in this paper, therefore, relate to the start-up portion of the experiment before steady-state was obtained. The transitions of NO and NH{sub}3 concentrations trend opposite each other before reaching the steady-state condition. The transitions of both species are classified by temperature ranges.
