Stratigraphic Framework and Architecture of the Deltas of Pennsylvanian Age in the Forest City and Cherokee Basins and Their Impact on Coalbed

The Western Interior Basin is located in Southwestern Iowa,Southeastern Nebraska,Western Missouri, Eastern Kansas and Northeastern Oklahoma and is composed of the Cherokee Basin,Forest City Basin and the Northeast Shelf in Oklahoma(Figure 1).The coals are of Middle to Upper Pennsylvanian Age and were part of the extensive peat swamps that extended from this area into Illinois,Warrior,Michigan and Appalachian basins.The primary coals of interest are in the Cherokee Group with some potential in the overlying Marmaton Group.The coals typically vary from 1 to 3 feet thick,high sulfur,moderate to high ash,low moisture,rank is medium volatile on the western side of the basin in Kansas and Oklahoma grading to High Volatile C in Southern Iowa and Eastern Missouri and many seams are laterally continuous over large areas.
