The critical role of effective and reliable earthing in Computer Centers and other heavily microprocessor-based loads (Servers, high density Blade Servers, Routers, mass storage devices etc) is often overlooked or underemphasised. High power quality and reliability can only be achieved if the earthing is effective. However, the investment in a good earthing system is the least expensive of all the available "reliability" measures. Figure 1.1 illustrates the foundation role that earthing plays in a design for high reliability. As each layer is invested in the design will only benefit if the previous layers are well executed. The "bottom" line is - spend as much as you like on your critical power system but it will fail if the Earthing system is inadequate.
