Performance Evaluation of Hygienic Antimicrobial Coatings

In health care institutions as well as hospitality,catering and food industries,hygiene requirements are tightened up to prevent large scale outbreaks of diseases of microbial origin,such as MRSA,Listeria,E.coli O157:H7,Legionella,noroviruses and SARS.Increased hygiene anxiety leads to a growing interest in the application of hygienic,antimicrobial coatings in various situations.So far general criteria and harmonized test methods to evaluate the performance of antimicrobial coatings,as well as criteria for specific applications,are lacking.Currently applied agar diffusion and suspension type efficacy test methods appeared not suitable for proper claim substantiation,to verify special effects in practical situations and to assess the durability.TNO is developing dedicated,tailor-made testmodels to substantiate claims for specific applications.We will present and discuss new test procedures,using pilot plant facilities,biofilm reactors and flow cells,to evaluate the performance of antimicrobial coatings.
