Intelligent Design Tools to Support Mass Customised Shoe Production

The move from mass production to mass customisation of shoes brings the need for a significant transformation of existing practices in design and manufacture. At present one of the biggest challenges in supporting such mass customisation is the technology and systems related to the design and production of shoe soles. The AMST Centre at Loughborough University in collaboration with Delcam and ITIA has undertaken innovative research in the EU Framework V EUROShoE project to provide major advantages to the European shoe sole supply industry. This work as focused on a totally new approach to customised shoe sole design and manufacture through the development of integrated design and manufacturing tool using the Delcam PowerSHAPE CAD system. This paper presents research into the analysis of a set of injected EVA components to determine the expansion characteristics of EVA and the use of morphing for automatic cavity prediction of EVA moulds.
