Wireless sensor networks are an emerging field of network technology that have been made possible due to the recent advances in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, low power digital electronics and embedded technology. This paper discusses some of the recent advances made in energy aware routing protocols by researchers nowadays in the field of wireless sensor networks. A critical problem faced by researchers today is how to reduce energy consumption and increase battery life in nodes in wireless sensor networks. Energy aware routing will select the most efficient route over multi-hop wireless network for sensor data transmission and reduce power consumption. The paper then proposes a model for wireless sensor networks where the sink node utilizes the energy reserves information on sensor nodes to make routing decisions. The proposed model environment is further simulated using java programming language.
