In the course of the past few years, weight-saving design has taken on high importance in the automotive industry. The trend toward greater comfort and safety (weight increase) and, at the same time, fuel economy and exhaust emission reduction have led to the requirement to construct lighter-weight auto bodies. In this context, steel is having to face up to the challenges of specifically lighter materials such as aluminium, magnesium and plastics.
