Modern society is increasingly dependent on electric energy. Therefore, there is a strong and growing demand on availability of the electric power supplied. On the other hand there is a need to revamping existing facilities located in urban zones where there are no possibilities to extend the physical space. The availability requirements in air insulated conventional substations are normally satisfied using systems of multiple bus bars that provide an easy access for maintenance, for example, of the circuit breakers. However, the systems of multiple bus bars require a larger quantity of conventional disconnector switches and space. Consequently, the need to perform maintenance work is increased and the availability is decreased. By using well designed and operated electric transmission systems the number and durations of blackouts can be minimized. High voltage electrical equipment manufacturers have developed new technologies in order to satisfy both requirements: availability and compaction of the substations. These technologies have been developed based on air insulated switchgear (AIS) and gas insulated switchgear (GIS), or in a combination of them designed as mixed technologies switchgear (MTS). New technologies are described in this work. Examples applied to existing substations in Argentina are showed, some of which are already in service and others under construction.
