TSO Pan-European Co-operation and further steps and initiatives to strengthen the Power System Security with ENTSO-E-Wide Awareness System

Operational security of the electricity supply is very much based on the high level of TSO Co-operation and having awareness is critical for the TSOs in this matter. The European interconnected transmission system has become more complex to operate while fulfilling the energy and climate objectives of 2020 and 2030 and the way towards a European Single Electricity market. Legal obligations and rules with lately taken decisions in a direction the TSOs responsibility become even more overall in context and awareness linked to ensure defence actions and measurements/information by EAS. Step by step, with todays "Market Couplings" and more and more HVDC links coming into operation, connecting and integrating different synchronous electrical systems together, the understanding of other parts of the European network and operations has become more complex and much more challenging. In Europe it has become a priority to develop and make improvements in TSO operational co-operation and in this context, real-time cooperation and coordination between operators by using a joint Operational IT-Tool. The decision to implement an EAS in ENTSO-E was taken 2009, when ENTSO-E founded. This "Paper" will bring detailed information and the ideas behind ENTSO-E's decision to install a Pan-European Awareness System. This is closely linked to principals in coordination and operational procedures, further developments and improvements in the co-operation between Operators & Control Centres beyond neighbouring TSOs and the own synchronous area. The initiatives have been viewed as a very positive step forward by the TSOs with the system in operation in the TSO Control Centres (National/Regional). Operational security and reliability are the goals of the TSO business and will always be the TSOs key issue in the daily work.
