The management environment for an electric utility is changing day by day. Power systems become larger as the demand for power continues to grow. Uncertainty of power system operation is increasing because there is a new surge of interest towards increasing the proportion of renewable energy supplies to solve the environmental issues. On the other hand, more competition is introduced in the power industry, so that power utilities have to operate and manage existing assets more efficiently. The evaluation scheme for power networks, such as construction of corridor or special protection scheme (SPS), is very important to build high security power systems at smallest cost. For this purpose, network asset management (NAM) requires analytical applications. Also, NAM applications shall be based on commonly used set of tools. Such tools have higher reliability due to years of operation by many users. This paper discusses the power system analytical data handling in database technology. This method is also useful to convert from node/breaker level data based on geographical information system (GIS) databases to node/branch level data utilized by popular power system applications. The contents of this paper are as follows. Survey of the leading-edge trends of NAM. Necessity of a data base to handle all network analysis data. Importance of combining the NAM data base and the network analysis database. How to combine the network analysis database and popular analysis applications. Necessity to develop new type applications providing index of stability Finally, the usefulness of this proposed scheme is shown by discussions on transmission line maintenance planning based on severity ranking of transmission line faults. The severity ranking is obtained from advanced applications (i.e. a transient screening program). It is effective to compare performance and cost between developing new transmission line cases and installing special protection schemes to maintain power system stability.
