Commissioning of the Italy - Sicily 420 kV submarine link: field test results

The paper deals with time domain simulations of a 420 kV ac submarine cable line between Italy and Sicily. The study analyses the switching transients upon link energization, switching manoeuvres and faults, under different network scenarios, in order to identify the most suitable switching sequence. Simulations have been carried out using two different electromagnetic transient programs, in order to evaluate the expected accuracy. The same portion of the Sicilian and Southern Italy EHV network has been represented in both programs; however, due to different software limitations, different cable and transformer models have been used. The results of time domain simulations obtained by the two tools show a very good agreement, so that the expected overvoltages can be considered, to a good approximation, closely matching the real behaviour of the entire system. Finally, the verification of the cable model employed with one of the software has been performed, and some remarks regarding the delayed zero cross have been reported.
