Experimental and numerical investigations on atomization of liquid sheet were conducted to clarify the primary breakup process. The radially expanding sheet was produced by impingement of two water jets in still ambient air. At high Weber number, it was observed experimentally that the instability wave on the liquid sheet was induced by interactions between liquid and ambient air. The three dimensional unsteady motions of liquid sheets were simulated by the developed numerical method. The growth of instability waves and the following breakup process, which were dominant phenomena of primary breakup, were captured qualitatively. It was shown that axial and radial liquid distributions changed drastically due to transformations of the liquid sheet after it broke apart.
