Vaccines for Minor Use/Minor Species (MUMS) in the European Union

The issue of the availability of veterinary vaccines has been much discussed since the introduction of harmonised Community pharmaceutical legislation led to a reduction in the range of products available. Initiatives have been launched at Community and national level to attempt to address the issue, to date with little success in terms of actually increasing the number or range of products on the market. This article attempts to define the issues that need to be faced in identifying solutions to the problem in relation specifically to immunological veterinary medicinal products (IVMPs) and goes on to identify legislative or policy changes that would need to be introduced to effect these solutions.
