The new Center for Bio-health for the University of North Texas Health Science Center was designed with mechanical systems intended to provide maximum user safety to its occupants, provide a high-level of reliable performance to protect the integrity of the research activities performed, and to attain the maximum amount of energy efficiency possible without sacrificing safety or performance. The building systems were designed to conform to design guidelines published by the National Institute of Health. To ensure occupant safety, the laboratory modules are operated under negative pressure, with tracking control to maintain prescribed airflow offsets. The Center for Bio-health was also designed to provide optimum environmental conditions and system redundancy, while limiting the noise and vibration generated by the mechanical systems. Key mechanical systems including laboratory exhaust, chillers and outside air treatment were targeted for energy efficiency, as well.
