When modelling the production process of thermome-chanical pulp, models entirely based on physical assumptions have, despite their complexity, turned out to be insufficiently comprehensive. An alternative modelling method is statistical parameter estimation, whose linear approach, however, does not cover the direction-dependent responses. In this paper, direction-dependent, parametric models are computed from data acquired at a full scale thermomechanical pulp plant and are subsequently compared with their linear time-invariant counterparts. As a result, it is shown that the linear time-invariant models are not always sufficient to describe the dynamics from the hydraulic pressure to the motor load.
