A new concept is being developed for an IPEM-based modular motor drive in which the basic module consists of a segmented stator motor pole combined with its associated phase-drive IPEM. This paper describes progress towards designing a new type of two-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine appropriate for modular construction using soft magnetic composite (SMC) materials. Closed-form expressions for the estimated torque production capabilities of this new machine have been derived in terms of key machine dimensions, magnet flux density, and excitation voltage or current. Three-dimensional finite-element analysis is being carried to analyze the machine's electromagnetic performance in more detail. Initial agreement between the torque predictions of the closed-form and finite element analyses look promising.
